DIY electrical installation – what are you allowed to do?
Interested in handling minor electrical tasks yourself? Certain small jobs can be carried out without authorisation, provided:
• The existing installation is correctly installed
• You follow national electrical safety regulations
• The power supply is disconnected before starting work
• A residual current device (RCD) is installed
Typical DIY tasks may include:
• Replacing and installing lamp holders
• Installing extension cords and portable socket outlets
• Replacing certain types of FUGA switches
• Installing or removing lighting fixtures (with restrictions in bathrooms and wet rooms)
As a general rule, you may only perform work that does not alter the fixed electrical installation of the building.
