War years and business acumen
Despite Denmark's occupation – or the turbulent economy of the 70s – Thorkild Vagn Strøh Christensen was not afraid to take the spoon in the other hand and bring his eye for a good deal into play. Resources and raw materials were in high demand, yes - already as a child, Thorkild saw a healthy business in repairing everything from bicycle hoses to nails. His commercial interest was not denied; on the contrary, he was eagerly sent on summer trips to Jutland, which at the time was considered the best place to refine his sales skills. His talent could now unfold on 200 acres of land with a family with whom he learned to sell chickens and pigs.
High school and commerce were difficult to reconcile, and Thorkild, after some consideration on the part of his parents, apprenticed to a freight forwarding company – the international environment and hardcore dollars drew more in the stalwart guy. The blue wave did not frighten at first, and Thorkild put to sea with the title of handyman bound for Genoa, Italy. However, marine life did not become what he dreamed of, and the dirty engine compartment was replaced with telegraphist studios. With empty pockets, Thorkild went ashore, and came under the wing of his father-in-law, an equally enterprising seller of, among other things, sugar, as you may know from Matador, was hugely sought after.
The parsley chopper that led to another adventure abroad
The kitchen should already turn out to be the focal point for the family. The father-in-law is the man behind a true 50s classic, namely the parsley chopper with swivel handle. An invention that did not satisfy his ambitions, however, Thorkild and he headed for Germany, where they came into contact with the Frenchman, Jean-Maure, whose father was behind the renowned ventilation company Thermor. Thorkild was able to speak several languages and paved the way for trade contacts. Today, Thermex can also be found in Rødovre, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Spain.
Thorkild filled his suitcase with six fans and the drive to become independent. And what could be more obvious than to start by getting rid of the bad air that ravaged the toilets in the pubs in Copenhagen. His direct, creative manner threw off orders – and a handshake was immediately given to get an installer to ensure correct installation. You'll still be able to come across some of the original solutions around shops and bodegas, so the quality is truly worth toasting.
Sales cover and ventilation development at rocket speed from 1958 – 2008
Under the name Thermex Scandinavia A/S, as it is called today, Thorkild continued his purchases from France and went from pub to pub with quality fans in his suitcase. And since he was not lost behind a wagon, the business went more and more towards sales to professionals including glaziers, electrical and plumbing installers and wholesalers. Several name changes were test-driven, but it was certain that Thorkild and his wife supported each other in the company, which was initially run from their own apartment in Rødovre. The bedroom and then a garage constituted storage, and the red Ford Taunus was packed for the meeting with customers.
In 1963, Herlev became the place to expand the business under the name Thermor Domestics, when Thorkild met a glassblower. As the business is now finally profitable with room for 3 employees, the location is moved to Brønshøj. The following year, Hjørringenser, Svend Steffensen, will play an important role in sales in Jutland with deliveries directly from Brønshøj. However, Hjørring got its own warehouse in 1974, partly to alleviate the lack of space on "Devil's Island," and partly to the economy in relation to both basic prices and wage levels. And then the North Jutland had a reputation for being a stable workforce.
Thrift and hard work pay off in 1968, when the family moves into a patrician villa that requires renovation with three garages and thus greater storage capacity. The home office is Thorkild's favorite, and he even sets up an offset printing company for advertising material in the basement.
Thermexhas always been conscious of being sharp communicators, which a nationwide satisfaction survey among dealers clearly reflected – and they were curious about what else Thermex could dish up in terms of unique inventions such as its own cookbook and competitions to become Danish champion in Emfang.
Innovation and the powerful extractors led to Thermex being the first in the home appliance industry to run advertisements on TV2. The ventilation company has always emphasized the close dialogue with customers and dealers at trade fairs to keep up with needs and product development.
Kitchen and bath design is all about lifestyle
Air change and extraction are definitely Thermex's core competencies. For half a century, the Danish producer has created solutions for both the small bath and kitchen of Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, and the exclusive of the young, modern family, who also enjoy a good glass of grapes from their own wine fridge. Since its 25th anniversary in 1983, the company has also folded on the Norwegian and Swedish markets. In addition, there is a subsidiary in Barcelona as well as exports to, among others, the United States. England and Germany.
The founder, Thorkild himself loved cooking and today it is the next generation of families who help create the right framework for your kitchen. Did you know, for example, that Thermex was the first on the Danish market to make it possible for you as a private consumer to get an induction hob? Efficiency, sound level, operating facilities and beautiful design have always been the focal point of the enterprising North Jutland manufacturer.
